ETIM Translator
ETIM Translator is a localization tool designed for the ETIM 10 classification. It supports the setup and execution of the entire translation process for the ETIM vocabulary. In the age of AI-assisted translation, the typical ETIM translation workflow is largely focused on verifying pre-translated content. As a result, the application does not distinguish between "translation" and "verification" — the two are treated as one process. Similarly, the terms "translator" and "verifier" are used interchangeably and simply refer to the user.
A translation process can be divided into several parts (e.g. involving one or more class groups). The main idea of the process is that each element is translated or verified by two (or more) users.
ETIM Translator provides an appropriate platform for easy translation process management for both the user and the manager. A special statistics module helps the user to navigate through the elements assigned to them and to edit and approve translations in the target language, while the manager can track the progress of the translators or verifiers and conduct verification sessions.
The biggest advantage of the software is that it enables contextual translation of ETIM elements. On one hand, it allows the translation of class names with consideration of the features and values that describe the class, which helps in selecting the most accurate name. On the other hand, it supports the translation of features and values within the context of a specific class, rather than as standalone phrases.
Additionally, the software provides the ability to view all occurrences of a given phrase across different classes, making it easier to choose a translation that works consistently across all relevant contexts. Such a translation is often a compromise, but it is more effective than one that only fits a single class while being unsuitable for others.
When approving the translation of individual elements, users can see not only the context and scope of usage, but also the full history of previous name changes. This helps avoid unintentionally reverting to earlier translations that were previously rejected — especially in cases where different translators made changes based on local context.
The software allows users to add notes when saving elements and to flag any doubts for later clarification. It also ensures consistency across all ETIM items — groups, classes, features, values, units, and the relationships between them. Another valuable feature is the automation of repetitive tasks. Users can: look up automatic translations via Google Translate using auxiliary languages, search for existing translations in the translation memory, instantly open a Google search for selected text or get AI-generated translation suggestions (available soon).
The tool includes a powerful search-and-replace mechanism that simplifies global updates and helps maintain consistency across translations. There's also a useful comparison tool that lets users compare two classes or detect duplicates — such as classes with the same name, or identical features within a single class.
ETIM Translator is a software solution that enhances the quality of ETIM classification translations and speeds up the translation process by enabling collaborative work in a shared environment.
