ETIM Translator
ETIM Translator is a software tool designed to help with the translation of the ETIM classification system. It makes it easier to manage and complete the translation process for all ETIM terms. The translation process has two main steps: translating the terms and then reviewing them for accuracy. This process can also be broken down into smaller tasks, focusing on specific parts of the ETIM classification. The main idea is that each term is first translated by one person, then reviewed by two or more others. Any differences in translations can be addressed during review sessions.
ETIM Translator provides an efficient platform to manage translations and review them. It includes a special module to track the progress of both translators and reviewers. The software also helps maintain consistency across all ETIM terms, including groups, classes, features, values, units, and their relationships.
One of the key benefits of ETIM Translator is that it allows for "contextual" translations. This means that when translating a class name, for example, the related features and values are considered, making it easier to choose the right translation. Features and values are translated in the context of the class they belong to, not as separate phrases. Users can also check how a term is translated across different classes, which helps ensure the translation is consistent in all situations. Though these translations might require some compromise, they are generally better than translations that work for only one class but don't fit others.
ETIM Translator also includes helpful tools for speeding up repetitive tasks, such as:
- using Google Translate for automatic translations based on auxiliary languages,
- searching for previously translated phrases using translation memory,
- quickly looking up terms using Google Search.
The software also allows users to add notes when saving translations and mark terms that need further review. All changes to translations are logged, so users can track the history of modifications and avoid "looping" (repeated changes to translations made by different users based on local context).
A useful feature allows users to compare two classes side by side. ETIM Translator improves the quality of translations and speeds up the overall translation process by supporting teamwork in a shared, collaborative environment.
